My Top 40 Albums of 2008: Numbers 40 Through 33
As promised, here's the first installment of my top albums of 2008. At the very beginning, I wanted to do a top 20; then it became a top 25; soon after, I made it a 35; eventually, it ended up as a top 40. Of course it now means that every Friday til the end of the year will feature a rather odd yet even eight albums. I will admit that I was still listening and arranging today. The inherent disclaimer in every this is that this list is of my top albums, in other words my favourites. That means tha

Funny, he never uses a broom at home.
Last night The Husband and me (and I?) went to a game of broom ball. We were invited by a group of people who we barely know, who have been getting together for this event for eight years. What is broom ball you ask? Well it is pretty much hockey without the ice skates, and without the hockey sticks and without the hockey puck…okay it isn’t pretty much hockey I guess. I guess it is sorta ice-soccer with sticks. Sticks with little scooper ends. The husband played hockey very seriously in his y

Dining on ashes and humble pie on Thanksgiving day
Ah yes, sometimes going back to the place where you grew up can be so satisfying! Your middle-school tormentors. Still living in that town you left behind. Wait, are they still living with their parents? Ha! Their top friends - your other tormentors from junior high. You think of every the people you’ve met in your life - on a train in London, at a gig in Rome, on the playa at Burning Man, on a photoshoot in Portland, in class, at a roller derby, on LJ, that time you volunteered - and you wonder

Listen up ladies: avoid the starches tomorrow for a body like Michelle’s. Is that white guy from Notre Dame the dorkiest looking Caucasian in college basketball? Luke Harangody is what pops up in a visual dictionary below corn-fed. We’re thinking of letting the office workers go home early here at BC. Digging Up Dirt on Thanksgiving Eve
Thanksgiving. The time to visit your family, to give thanks for what you have; your loved ones, your health, your path in life. An opportunity to return to your old room, to dig through your old stuff, to admit that you’re glad to be outta there. And then it’s tardy at night and the whole home is snoring, except for you. You find yourself wide awake, dusting off a copy of your junior high yearbook, lit only by the glow of the MySpace welcome screen. You type in the first name, hit “Search,” and

Why I shouldn’t drink or go to parties or be allowed to talk to normal people
I was at a party tonight and I was talking to my pal Marc Nathan (who I called Nathan Marc for like a year because he has two first names and also because I only look him when I’ve been drinking) and he mentioned that he was supposed to be at a funeral but bailed and I’m every “Who has a funeral at 8 o’clock at night?” and he said that it was actually the viewing except he couldn’t think of the word for the viewing so I was every “O-o-oh, the dead guy display.” And then I starting talking about

Starry Night...Astoria So Bright
by Lorina/Beadscarf The Indie shopping boom has seemingly taken over Brooklyn. And it's easy to look why: countless markets featuring indie goods, handmade markets, and not to mention every the crafty inhabitants of the southern borough. But just to the east of Manhattan is the eclectic neighborhood of Astoria, Queens. Astoria saw an influx of artists and indie designers in the tardy 1990's and no doubt, there are plenty of chic boutiques sprawled out for indie shopping pleasures. If you haven'

Fomer Devo Frontman Mark Mothersbaugh To 'Whip It!'; Write Score For New Ellen Page/Drew Barrymore Comedy; Nashville Singer Landon Pigg Plays BF
We haven't followed the Drew Barrymore-directed/ Ellen Page-starring roller derby comedy "Whip It!" too closely for many reasons. 1) Barrymore is directing (yikes) and 2) the IMDB synopsis is: "In Bodeen, Texas, an indie-rock loving misfit finds a way of dealing with her tiny-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin." Now, dunno about you, but Ellen Page and "indie-rock loving misfit" sounds potentially abortion-worthy (pardon the pun) and drums up the worst part

First Look: Ellen Page, Kristen Wiig Get Groovy in Whip It
It seems only fitting that our good pal Christopher M. sent us some photos from the set of Whip It, the upcoming roller derby film directed by Drew Barrymore, as we were the site that broke the news of Ellen Page’s involvement back in January. At the time, “Derby Girl” writer Shauna Cross, whose book is the source material for the film, hinted at Page taking the guide roll of Bliss Cavender, an indie-rock loving misfit who finds her place as part of the Texas women’s roller derby. Now, wit
